FBI warns of BEC scammers impersonating construction companies

The FBI has issued a warning to companies about scammers impersonating construction companies to target critical US infrastructure sectors. These scammers collect information on construction companies and their customers using online services from local and state government budget data portals, and also from subscription-based construction industry data aggregators. They are then able to craft convincing emails using this information, stolen company logos and graphics, and spoofed domains of legitimate websites. These scammers will ask to change direct deposit accounts and ACH information so that pending and future payments are redirected to them. In 2020, the Internet Crime Complaint Center reported that almost two billion dollars have been lost to BEC scams.
